Arab leaders amend charter of security, peace council

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt, March 29 (KUNA) -- Arab leaders adopted Sunday a resolution, at the conclusion of their 26th summit, amending the Arab Peace and Security Council in a bid to develop the Arab joint action and response to threats.
The amended charter, which includes 10 items, stipulates supporting peace, security and stability of the Arab League member states without interfering in the internal affairs of any state.
It also calls for enhancing democracy, good governance, sovereignty of law, protection of human rights and respect of the international law.
Among the goals is backing efforts of the post-conflict reconstruction for promoting peace and preventing disputes again alongside coordinating efforts to the global counter-terrorism in all its forms and aspects.
Under the amendment, the council is held at the ministerial level twice per year, preceded by the ordinary meetings of the Arab League Council.
The Arab Peace and Security Council prepares strategies that maintain Arab peace and security alongside reinforcing the Arab capabilities by developing early warning systems and diplomatic endeavors.
The amendment includes also the formation of Arab peacekeeping force to be ready for a rapid deployment if necessary arises.
The Arab leaders also urged the heads of committees tasked with the proposed amendment of the Arab League Charter to finish their task within three months.
The leaders welcomed Morocco's hosting of the 27th Arab League Summit next March. (end) msh.mfm.rgh.hm
