Kuwaiti lawyers visit ICC, OPCW

BRUSSELS, March 13 (KUNA) -- A delegation of Kuwait Lawyers Association met with officials of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the Organization of Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to discuss bilateral cooperation.
The visit to ICC in the Hague, Netherlands, will enable Kuwaiti lawyers to explore how international criminal investigation works, and how ICC personnel handle international ciminal cases and the implementation of ICC verdicts, said Tareq Al-Shumaimri, Counsellor at Kuwait's Embassy to the Netherlands.
He told KUNA over the phone the Kuwaiti lawyers and the ICC officials exchanged views regarding the organization of training for Kuwaiti lawyers in ICC.
Kuwait and other Arab countries are not members in ICC because its regulations contradict with their constitution.
Al-Shumaimri said the Kuwaiti lawyers also visited Hague-based OPCW, where Dr. Talal Al-Azmi, Kuwait's representative to the organization, briefed lawyers about mandate of OPCW which has more than 190 member countries.
Othman Al-Saif, a Kuwaiti lawyer, told KUNA the visits aimed at educating the Kuwaiti lawyers on how these two organizations operate in a manner that contribute to addressing threats facing people around the world.
The Kuwaiti lawyers have visited last Tuesday the Peace Palace, which is home to a number of international judicial institutions, including the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), and Hague Academy of International Law. (end) nk.bs
