Kuwaiti society promotes new planting culture

KUWAIT, March 2 (KUNA) -- The Kuwait Environment Protection Society (KEPS) has affirmed success of a recently launched hydroponic planting project according to the special nutrient film technique -- growing plants in nutrient-rich shallow waters.
The KEPS said in a statement to KUNA on Monday the Kuwaiti expert, Fawwaz Al-Gurayan, had worked out this project, holding workshops for up to 60 participants, who were educated on the hydroponic planting, practically and theoretically. Six teams made successful tests of growing plants in water-filled plastic pipes.
The society is seeking to spread this technique to various segments of the Kuwaiti society, with aim of encouraging citizens used empty spaces and spots with vegetables and fruit-bearing plants in and around their houses.
Nutrient film technique (NFT) is a hydroponic technique wherein a very shallow stream of water containing all the dissolved nutrients required for plant growth is re-circulated past the bare roots of plants in a watertight gully, also known as channels. (end) zak.rk
