Ninth anniv. of His Highness the Amir's reign celebrated Thursday

KUWAIT, Jan 28 (KUNA) -- Kuwait marks tomorrow (Thursday) the ninth anniversary of the accession of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to the reign of the State of Kuwait.
On January 26, 2006, the National Assembly held a special session where he was constitutionally sworn in for his new post.
His Highness began his political career on July 19, 1954 when he was appointed a member of the executive committee tasked with overhauling and streamlining all government departments and agencies at the time.
A few years later, in February 1959, he became head of the government's department for publications and social services, following which in 1962, he was appointed a member in the council in charge of drafting a constitution for the newly-independent state of Kuwait.
By 1962, all government departments had been changed to ministries and His Highness Sheikh Sabah was given the post of minister of the ministry of news and guidance and in 1963 he became minister of the ministry of foreign affairs.
In December 1965, besides his post at the foreign ministry, he was also given the task to be acting minister of the ministry of oil and finance and on February second, 1971 he was acting minister of the ministry of information and on February 16, 1978 he was acting minister of interior.
On July 13, 2003 he was entrusted with the post of prime minister in a cabinet he formed.
His Highness Sheikh Sabah held the post of foreign minister longer than anyone in the history of Kuwait, gaining through it extensive experiences, which became useful in dealing with other nations' policies and relations. He nurtured a well-deserved reputation for the ability to mediate and solve problems affecting other nations.
In his long stint in the diplomatic corps, His Highness was able to develop long-lasting relationships with numerous foreign dignitaries with beneficial reflections on Kuwaiti interests as evidenced in his wide contacts with world leaders during the 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
Through his nine years of reign, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah had played an integral role in regional and international politics.
On the regional level, His Highness the Amir managed to ease tension amongst several GCC countries during the Gulf Summit in Riyadh on November 16, 2014. Also His Highness Sheikh Sabah made a historical visit to Iran on June 1 the same year; the first of its kind since becoming Amir of Kuwait.
The highlight of His Highness the Amir's career came on September 9, 2014 when he was chosen by the UN as a humanitarian leader. His honorary also led the UN to choosing of Kuwait as a global humanitarian center.
The honoring came as a result of Kuwait ongoing supportive stance towards the Syrian refugees which led to the organization of two international donors' conference for the Syrian refugees in Kuwait.
Kuwait donated around USD 800,000 million in both events.
His Highness the Amir also ordered the donation of USD five million on January 5 to construct a town for the Syrian refugees in Jordan. (end) sr.gta
