KUWAIT, Dec 3 (KUNA) -- Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano valued Kuwait's significant efforts in backing IAEA's activities, affirming that Kuwait is one of the important countries in boosting international peace and stability in the region.
Prior to his departure Wednesday, Amano told reporters that his visit to the country was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Kuwait's membership at IAEA, noting that Kuwait has "a good and effective" role in the Agency's work fields.
A number of subjects regarding atomic science have been discussed with a number of Kuwaiti officials, scientists, and researchers, he said, adding that ways to use safe atomic energy in various fields such as treatment of cancer patients, water, and environment protection were also discussed during the visit.
On Iran's nuclear program, Amano said that the Iranian program is still under the negotiation stage, adding that the Agency is trying to reach a comprehensive solution to satisfy all sides. However, more time is needed in order to accomplish this matter, he noted.
Earlier, Amano paid a visit to Jaber Al-Ahmad Nuclear Medicine Center, affiliated with Kuwait Foundation for Advancement of Science (KFAS), during which he checked the center's facilities, equipment, and departments, KFAS said in a press statement.
He also discussed ways of cooperation prospects between IAEA and the Center in nuclear medicine field, as well as ways to exchange expertise and training courses to boost bilateral relations between Kuwait and the Agency. (end) sfm.jk.ma
