KUWAIT, Dec 1 (KUNA) -- Marathon for people with disabilities was launched here on Monday, on the occasion of celebrating International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), under the patronage of the Undersecretary of Social Affairs and Labor Abdul-Mohsen Al-Mutairi.
Assistant undersecretary for social care Dr. Fatma Al-Mulla who launched the marathon, said in remarks to KUNA today that his event came to shed light on people with disabilities and their unlimited capabilities.
Such activities aim to allow people with disabilities to interact with the society besides spreading awareness of concerns of the handicapped, Al-Mulla added.
She expressed her happiness for the high turnout in this event which reflects the national and humanitarian commitment, as well as social solidarity.
A number of bodies representing the Ministry of Defense, National Guard, Ministry of Education, besides some social figures attended the event.
International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is a United Nations sanctioned day that aims to promote an understanding of people with disabilities. It has been observed since December 3 1992.
It aims at increasing awareness of vital issues concerning people with disabilities, to protect their rights and allow them to engage in various social activities. (end) mt.lb
