Syrian conflict claims lives of over 17,000 children - SNHR

AMMAN, Nov 21 (KUNA) -- The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) on Friday reported that more than 17,268 children have been killed and nearly 9,500 others detained since the breakout of the armed conflict in March, 2011.
The report, released on the occasion of the Universal Children's Day, says the documented deaths include 518 children who were killed by sniper fire and 94 tortured to death.
The 9,500 child detainees include 1,600 forced disappearances while at least 280,000 others were injured.
Children represent over seven percent of the total number of victims of the conflict which indicates that the regular troops intentionally target them, the SNHR said.
More than 4.7 million children are deemed internally displaced while the number of child refugees topped 2.9 million.
Displacement deprived at least 1.3 million Syrian children of education, according to the report.
The SNHR accused the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) of committing "war crimes" against children such as indiscriminate shelling, sexual abuses, torture, forced recruitment, and turning some schools into training camps for militants.
The militant group killed at least 137 children and detained 455 others besides hundreds of recruited minors.
Other militant groups killed some 304 children, detained 1,000 and used some children in militant attacks, the report added.
The SNHR also accused the Kurdish troops of committing extrajudiciary killings and forced recruitment against children, noting that at least 14 children were killed by Kurdish fighters.
On the situations of children at Syrian refugee camps in neighboring countries, the report complained that over 85,000 children born at these camps suffer from deprivation of citizenship. (end) tk.gb
