Kuwait strongly condemns human rights violations in Syria at UN session

GENEVA, Sept 16 (KUNA) -- Kuwait has strongly condemned the serious violations of human rights and the killing of Syrians for the fourth year in a row in the 27th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) held Tuesday.
Today's session shed light on a report submitted by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry into Syrian affairs that showed the ongoing aggression committed against the innocent Syrians by Al-Assad government.
Kuwait's permanent delegate to the UN Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghunaim said in his address to the assembly that "Kuwait urges to stop these violations and calls for abiding by international human rights laws and regulations. It also demands the people to move safely and freely in their own country. It also calls for lifting the siege on all areas." Kuwait has warned against the repercussions of this fighting since the beginning of the conflict in Syria and its impact on the security and the stability in the region, Al-Ghunaim added.
"Today, we are seeing a major humanitarian crisis affecting about three million Syrians who have been forced to flee their homes and seek refuge in neighboring countries," he added.
He pointed out that since Kuwait has devoted itself to humanitarian diplomacy as its foreign policy, it hosted two international donor conferences to support the Syrian crisis. Therefore, he urged donors' countries to honor their pledges and offer donations to the Syrian people "who are soon to be facing harsh winter conditions." Kuwait reiterated its full support to the independency and unity of Syria and urged for an immediate halt to the ongoing conflict. It also showed support to efforts made by UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura who is currently in the region.
The UNHRC has placed the human rights violations in Syria as fixed item of discussion on its agenda in order to follow-up and monitor the situation there. (end) ta.nfm
