BRUSSELS, Aug 30 (KUNA) -- Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini Saturday evening thanked the EU leaders for showing the trust in her by appointing her as the new EU foreign policy chief. "The challenges are huge especially in this time of crises," she told a press conference after her appointment was announced, pointing to Iraq, Syria , Libya, and Ukraine.
"It is all our neighbourhood that is suffering from conflicts and war. I know how challenging and difficult the task will be," she said.
"My clear and firm intention is to devote all my energy and all my work, my dedication, to work in the interest of all Member States, each and every one, and all the European citizens, each and every one, " stressed Mogherini.
Responding to criticisms that she lacks experience as a minister being only appointed last February, Mogherini said she is 41 years old and has 20 years of experience in foreign and political affairs.
On his part, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk who was elected new President of the European Council told the joint press conference: "I am really moved. It is important for me to become president tonight. I think it is also important for my country." "This is a very important moment because I am convinced that my legacy, my personal experience and our European dreams can become an important source of energy," he said.
Asked how he will coordinate with other EU leaders as he does not speak English or French, Tusk promised that he will learn English by December when he assumes his new post. Tusk was also appointed President of the Euro Summit.
On his part, the outgoing President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy, told the same press conference that Mogherini has been "at the frontlines in this difficult and intense period on the international scene, travelling across the globe. " "The European Council is convinced that she will prove a skilful and steadfast mediator, negotiator and defender of Europe's place in the world," he added. (pickup previous) nk.gb
