Panicked Algerian loses life after quake

ALGIERS, Aug 1 (KUNA) -- One woman lost her life and 51 people suffered various injuries due to the 5.6 magnitude earthquake that rattled the Algerian capital and suburban regions on Friday.
The general manager of the University Hospital in Algiers, Al-Hashemi Shawesh, explained that the woman, actually, dumped herself from the third floor of a multi-story building in the capital, indicating that she jumped to death due to panic.
Shawesh said 51 people suffered various wounds as many fled their houses to nearby streets and public locations, fearing the tremors might cause collapse of their homes.
The civil defense said 20 people were injured in the capital and Boumderdes, indicating that some of the injuries were caused by jostling and jumping from balconies.
Many panicked Algerian fled their houses when they sensed the tremors early today, according to the Algerian Center for Astrophysics and Geophysics. (pickup previous) ft.rk
