US concerned over charges against former Georgian President

WASHINGTON, July 29 (KUNA) -- The US on Tuesday expressed its concern over the filing of criminal charges by the Georgian Prosecutor's Office against former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.
"Commitment to the rule of law means both that everyone must comply with the law in a democratic society and that the legal system should not be used as a tool of political retribution," said State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki in a statement.
According to media reports, Saakashvili is being accused of abusing power and poor handling of political protests that turned violent.
"We are monitoring this and related cases closely, and continue to stress to Georgian officials the importance of rigorous adherence to due process and the rule of law," Psaki added. (end) ak.msa
