100,000-strong human chain calls for Basque independence from Spain

MADRID, June 8 (KUNA) -- Some 100,000 people across northern Spain's Basque Country region have joined hands to form a human chain over a 123km radius in a protest calling for the right of self-determination for their region.
The human chain, organised by Gure Esku Dago which translates from the Basque language as "It's in our hands", linked the northern cities of Pamplona and Durango, local TV images showed.
The move has been backed by some nationalist Basque parties and some parties representing Catalonia, who in turn are calling for independence.
In a similar instance in September 2013, some 1.6 million people joined hands calling for the independence of the northeastern Catalan region and a referendum for the right of self-determination. (end) hnd.sd
