BETHLEHEM, West Bank, May 25(KUNA) -- Pope Francis I called on both sides involved in the Middle East crisis to accelerate efforts aimed at a peace that is based on justice, acknowledging the rights of every human being and mutual security.
After meeting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the head of the Catholic Church told a press conference that the continued tragic struggle between the Israelis and the Palestinians has left huge wounds that have become difficult to heal.
He expressed hope that both would refrain from actions that undermine the desire for a peace agreement and that both would be courageous and determined in their approach.
Abbas, for his part, said that the Palestinians look to the Pope for his kind efforts on achieving their rights.
The Palestinians welcome initiatives by the Pope of the Holy See aimed at making peace a reality on the ground - by which our people may build their lives and future, he added.
He thanked the Pope for his encounters with Palestinian children in refugee camps, noting that these are living the sorrow and pain of displacement for 66 years now as a result of Israeli practices aimed at changing the demographics of the area.
These choking actions are aimed at driving out Christians and Muslims alike, and many have in fact left, he added, emphasising the importance of the continued existence of Christians in the Holy Land.
The Pope, who arrived earlier in the day, had held mass at the Church of the Nativity, where over 10,000 people had attended alongside them, President Abbas. (end) nq.sd
