EU voices "extreme concern" over situation in Thailand

BRUSSELS, May 22 (KUNA) -- The European Union (EU) Thursday expressed "extreme concern" over developments in Thailand after the military staged a coup and took over power following months of political turmoil.
"The military must accept and respect the constitutional authority of the civilian power as a basic principle of democratic governance. International human rights standards, including media freedom, must be upheld," Michael Mann, spokesman for EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, said in a statement.
"It is of the utmost importance that Thailand returns rapidly to the legitimate democratic process. In this respect, we stress the importance of holding credible and inclusive elections as soon as feasible," he added and called on all parties to exercise restraint and work together in the interest of the country.
