Parliament speaker urges Germany to play more active role in Syria

BERLIN, April 8 (KUNA) -- Visiting Kuwaiti National Assembly (parliament) Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim on Tuesday called on Germany to play a more active role in the alleviation of the current humanitarian crisis in Syria.
"We have stressed that it is necessary for Germany to play a more active role towards the humanitarian suffering in Syria," Al-Ghanim told KUNA and Kuwait TV following a meeting with the German parliamentary committee on foreign affairs chairman Norbert Rottgen.
"We have encouraged them to exert more efforts, and we have posted them on the suffering of Syrians in Jordan, Lebanon and even inside Syria," he said.
But, he emphasized that the view of the Arab region''''s parliaments should be conveyed to the German parliament which is a key European legislature.
On his meeting with the German member of parliament, he said they had discussed key regional issues, primarily Syria, Iraq, Egypt and Palestine.
He added that they had also discussed facilitated visa restrictions and economic cooperation between Kuwait and Germany.
On his part, Rottgen hailed the Kuwaiti parliament speaker''''s ongoing visit to Germany, saying there are mutual interests between Kuwait and Germany.
He said he had discussed with Al-Ghanim several issues of mutual interest, mainly the current situation in Iraq and the Syrian crisis.
Al-Ghanim arrived here late Monday, heading a Kuwaiti parliament delegation, as part of a tour that has already taken him to Muscat. The delegation is here at the invitation of German parliamentary committee on foreign affairs head Norbert Rottgen. (end) mah.mt
