Kuwaiti charities launch appeal to raise USD 142 mln for Syrian refugee housing blocks

KUWAIT, Jan 12 (KUNA) -- Several Kuwaiti state and non-government charities have appealed for international assistance aimed at building 10 housing blocks, worth KD 40 million (USD 142 million), for Syrian refugees residing in countries neighbouring their own.

Deputy Chairman of the Kuwaiti Relief Society Ahmad Al-Jasser urged Kuwaiti charities, governmental and non-governmental organizations to join a charitable project to build 10 housing blocks for Syrian refugees in Syria's neighboring countries.
He told at a news conference that it would be the first time for Kuwaiti charities to launch a single appeal for carrying out such a project, which is the first of its kind.
It mainly aims to ease out the pain and suffering of Syrian refugees and to fan out the culture of partnership for concerted relief efforts, he said.
The purpose of the project, which costs KD 40 million (USD 142 million), is to build 10,000 housing units in 10 new blocks, with each city costing KD four million and encompassing 1,000 units, with all required infrastructure utilities, he added.
The participating Kuwaiti charities will partake in the planning, implementation, operation and management of the housing project, Al-Jasser noted.
The Kuwaiti charities include Zakat House, Kuwait Public Awqaf Foundation, Direct Aid society, Society of the Revival of Islamic Heritage, Al-Rahma International Charity, Abdullah Al Nouri Charity Association and several others, he said.
The fresh charitable project comes at a time when Kuwait is standing prepared to host the Second International Pledging Conference on Wednesday, he remarked.
The initiative has capped one month and a half of discussions among charity officials, he pointed out.
It reflects the fact that both Kuwaiti government and people are interested in the Syrian crisis, and are seeking to alleviate the sufferings of Syrian refugees in neighboring countries, he boasted. (end) fk.tb.sd.mt KUNA 122024 Jan 14NNNN
