NEW DELHI, Jan 2 (KUNA) -- India is sending a special team of its senior
officers to violence- hit South Sudan to assess the political and security
situation, state-run All India Radio (AIR) reported Thursday.
The team will also discuss matters with the United Nations Mission in South
Sudan, (UNMISS). Approximately, 2,000 Indian peacekeepers are serving
in the (UNMISS), the report added.
South Sudan is witnessing the worst ethnic conflict that has killed at
least 1,000 people so far, report said.
India has already issued an advisory for all its nationals not to travel to
South Sudan and has asked those residing there to leave.
"Official sources said that the team, which is scheduled to leave by the
end of the week, will interact with the Indian nationals in South Sudan and
review the arrangements, currently in place, for the small staff in the Indian
Mission at Juba," the AIR reported.
Earlier in December, two members of the Indian contingent in (UNMISS) were
killed while another was injured during an attack on (UNMISS) compound at
Akobo in Jonglei State of South Sudan on 19 December, 2013 by the armed
rebels. (End)
