GENEVA, Dec 3 (KUNA) -- Kuwait called on the international community to
implement measures that would rid the world from landmines, said a Kuwaiti
diplomat here Tuesday.
In his speech to the meeting of members' states in the Convention on the
Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel
Mines, Kuwait's permanent representative at the UN and international
organizations Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghunaim said that his country was in support
of the international community efforts to ban landmines on a worldwide scale.
In order to fulfill the goals of the convention, a strong effort by all
involved parties must exist to diminish the presence of such a lethal weapon,
said the Kuwaiti official, adding that the meeting today was within the
efforts to eradicate landmines from existence.
The meeting for the member states in the Convention on the Prohibition of
the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on
their Destruction began here yesterday and will last still December fifth. To
date, there are 161 States Parties to the treaty.
The treat was sign in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on December 3rd, 1997 and
took effect on March first, 1991. (end)
