CAIRO, Oct 19 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary General Nabil Al-Araby said
he supported Saudi Arabia's decision to turn down UN Security Council
non-permament membership.
Al-Araby hoped, in a statement, the Saudi decision would trigger efforts to
reform the UNSC.
Al-Araby emphasized on Saudi Arabia's justifications that UNSC failed to
address many pressing issues like the Palestinian cause and the Syrian
conflict or clearing the Middle East from weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
The security counicl needs "comprehensive reform" which includes limiting
the use of veto by the five permanent members: the US, Russia, China, France
and Britain.
Saudi Arabia apologized yesterday for not accepting UNSC membership until
the Council was reformed and enabled, effectively and practically, to carry
out its duties and responsibilities in maintaining international peace and
security.
Saudi Arabia said its withdrawal from UNSC membership was due to failure to
resolve Palestinian cause for 65 years and continuation of Syrian crisis
without imposing sanctions against the Syrian regime, ading these were few
examples of evidence of the Council's inability to perform its duties and
responsibilities. (end)
