Kuwait Amir, Obama discuss Guantanamo prisoners, Iraq, Syria, Gulf security

WASHINGTON, Sept 13 (KUNA) -- His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, accompanied by Deputy chief of National Guard Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and an official delegation, visited US President Barack Obama at the Oval Office at the White House on Friday and discussed a host of issues.
"We have raised the continuous detention of Kuwaiti prisoners and I have urged the President to release them as soon as possible in light of the President's commitment to closing the Guantanamo detention facility, and the commitments provided by the Kuwaiti authorities," Sheikh Sabah said in a statement.
Sheikh Sabah, who thanked President Obama for hospitality and warm reception, said that "We have also voiced relief over the positive development of Kuwait-Iraq relations." The Amir of Kuwait said they have discussed "the security of the Gulf and our common endeavors to achieving security, stability and development in this vitally important region, particularly in the midst of current developments.
"We have discussed the severe humanitarian suffering of the brotherly Syrian people, and the deterioration of humanitarian conditions inside (Syria), and the refugees.
"We noted that all efforts should be combined and accelerated with the objective of achieving the peaceful solution and distancing the region from threat of war," said the Kuwaiti Amir.
"We have also asserted importance of achieving security and stability in Arab Republic of Egypt, and supporting all constructive steps especially the roadmap" said Sheikh Sabah, as well as achieving security and stability in Yemen.
His Highness the Amir also called for intensifying international efforts to creating suitable atmosphere to push forward the peace negotiations in the Middle East, coupled with continuous US efforts.
The Amir of Kuwait described his talks with President Obama as "fruitful and constructive." He said the talks covered a host of matters related "to our bilateral relations, and we have reiterated keenness to cement them for the best interest of the two countries." His Highness the Amir arrived in Andrews Air Force Base in Washington D.C. late Thursday on a two-day state visit.
The Amir is also accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, His Highness the Amir's Office Director Ahmad Fahad Al-Fahad, Amiri Diwan Advisor Mohammad Abdullah Abu Al-Hassan, Chief of Amiri Protocol Sheikh Khaled Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah Al-Nasser Al-Sabah and senior officials from the Amiri Diwan and the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry.
