MANAMA, June 4 (KUNA) -- Executive director of Bahrain's higher environment
council Dr. Adel Al-Zayani said the GCC countries attached great importance to
environment issues.
In a speech at the opening of a meeting of undersecretaries of environment
authorities in the six GCC countries, Al-Zayani said environmental matters
were top priority in the policies of the Arab Gulf countries.
He said environmental issues have become more complicated and interlated
with economy and politics. "The different general policies are interlated with
environmental policies which, generally speaking, make the States run the
environmental issues not the special environment authorities."
Al-Zayani said the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have
been coordinating with relavant international organizations like the UN
Environment Program (UNEP) and the Regional Organization of Protection of
Marine Environment (ROPME).
GCC assistant secretary general for environment Dr. Abdullah Al-Hashem
called for the approval of policies that would preserve environment. (end)
