DOHA, May 31 (KUNA) -- Istiqlal Al-Azmi was selected here on Friday as the
first Kuwaiti president of the international arbitration center of the EU.
The uncontested election took place during the senior-level forum of heads
of the centers of The Netherlands-based Union of Arab and Economic and
Managers in the European Union (UAEM-EU), she told KUNA.
"The forum brought together a constellation of eminent economists from 12
Arab and European countries," Al-Azmi pointed out.
"The conferees approved the Arab and European nominations for the
presidencies and membership of the UAEM-EU centers," she went on, noting that
the nominees, including her, have been inaugurated at a special ceremony.
Al-Azmi, a doctorate student, expressed joy for winning the post and
dedicated it to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah,
HH the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and the Kuwaiti
people.
"The Kuwaiti women managed in the recent years to assert themselves on the
local area before proceeding to the international area thanks to the constant
support from HH the Amir," she noted.
On her new post, Al-Azmi said she is tasked with contributing to the
efforts aiming to promote the growth in the Arab and European economies and
enhance cooperation and experience sharing between both sides.
She is also mandated to mediate in civilian and commercial disputes,
facilitate arbitration, and provide legal consultancy for all members of the
Union.
The UAEM-EU, a non-profit organization aiming to promote technical
cooperation between the Arab states and the EU member states, has more than 20
centers across the Arab region and Eurozone. (end)
