GENEVA, May 1 (KUNA) -- The State of Kuwait on Wednesday urged states
taking part in meetings of the preparatory commission of convention of
signatory states of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to adopt a realistic
policy toward the issue of non-proliferation of the deadly arms worldwide.
Kuwait concurs with other states' opinion that "there has been no tangible
progress" in the relevant devised action plans, particularly with regard of
holding a conference of clearing the Middle East of nuclear weapons, also
known as Helsinki conference, which was due to be held in December 2012, but
did not convene.
Arab states had cooperated with states involved in organizing the
convention since three years ago, but they were surprised to learn that it was
delayed "without legal basis or setting a new date for holding it," the
Kuwaiti diplomat pointed out, expressing Kuwait's frustration at failure to
hold the convention.
Kuwait seeks to clear the region of nuclear arms and weapons of mass
destruction for sake of establishing regional security and building
"confidence among all through a comprehensive and balanced perspective,"
Al-Fusam added.
Violations of the commitments, made in 2010 in this respect, will lead to
casting doubts on credibility of the (Nuclear non-Proliferation) Treaty,
Al-Fusam warned.
While affirming Kuwait's frustration toward the fruitless efforts that had
been exerted to hold the conference, the diplomat affirmed the Gulf State
readiness to cooperate with the concerned states to hold it later this year.
