Iraqi Kurdish leader eyes closer ties with Kuwait

ERBIL, North Iraq, Jan 16 (KUNA) -- President of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Masoud Barzani the State of Kuwait and the Kurds enjoy a long history of friendship and cooperation.
"In 2003 the leaders of Kurdistan region rejected the hostile comments made by the Iraqi government against Kuwait," Barzani said during his meeting with a Kuwaiti media delegation at Salaheddin resort here on Wednesday.
Welcoming the delegation, the Kurdish leader said: "Your kind visit to your brothers here is a good initiative from a constellation of the Kuwaiti intelligentsia to see the achievements made in the region." He recalled that late Kurdish leader Mullah Mustafa Barzani stood by Kuwait in the 1960s when the first president of Iraq Abdulkarim Qasim (July 1958 - February 1963) issued threats for Kuwait.
He voiced hope that the friendly ties between Kuwait and Kurdistan will be further strengthened in the coming years thanks to his close relationship with His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. (end) sbr.fyf.gb KUNA 162039 Jan 13NNNN
