Three Bosnian clerics qualify for Mufti race

SARAJEVO, Sept 9 (KUNA) -- The supreme Islamic authority council has chosen three out of four as candidates for the race of the head of the Muslim Ulema, or the grand Mufti of Bosnia.
Democratic and Shura principles were followed during the selection process, the Islamic Bir Radio said.
Secret voting took place between members of the supreme Islamic authority council, added the radio.
The Mufti of Tuzla, Husein Kazazovic came first with 63 votes while Mufti of Travnik Nusret Abdibegovic came second with 37 votes and Mufti of Sarajevo Husein Smajic followed with 36 votes. The fourth candidate Halil Mehtic of Zenica did not qualify because he only gained 16 votes.
Shura Council, or parliament, members will elect one of the three candidates during a session on September 23.
A candidate must be nominated by more than one governorate in Bosnia, or at least 10,000 Bosnians living outside the country. The candidate must not be younger than 40 years old, a graduate of the Islamic studies colleges, worked as an Imam, speaks Arabic and another international language. The candidate must be married.
