BAGHDAD, Aug 26 (KUNA) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki said on
Sunday that his country was keen to develop its military defensive
capabilities, including to purchase the US-made (F-16) fighter jets, calling
at the same time an end all internal disputes over oil investments.
According to Iraqi government statement, the remarks by Al-Maliki came
during his meeting with Iraqi Parliament Speaker Osama Al-Nujaifi, noting that
the Prime Minister also denied that the government was planning to bring
foreign forces into the country, but only keen on boosting its military
capabilities.
The Iraqi premier added that he called on all parties to end all disputes
concerning oil contracts and investment, and the importance of speeding up the
process in the parliament to approve laws needed which would not undermine
security of Iraq.
"As soon as names were submitted we would choose some of them and attempt
to have national reconciliation and approval from the council members,"
Al-Maliki said in response to a question about names of ministers taking over
interior and defense portfolios.
For his part, Al-Nujaifi said that he is working to repair all damage to
internal affairs and proceed toward reforms and political agreements. (end)
