Poll shows Romney preferred over Obama on handling US economic problems

WASHINGTON, July 23 (KUNA) -- US voters put Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney ahead of President Barack Obama in managing the nation's economy, cutting the federal budget deficit and job-creating, according to a poll release Monday.
The national Gallup/USA today poll found that more than 63 percent of voters surveyed believed Romney's business background would enable him to make good decisions on the nation's economic woes, versus 29 percent who disagreed.
However, Obama scored a significant advantaged over his republican contender as the more likable candidate, by a vote of 2-1. By double digits, those surveyed say the president better understands the problems Americans face in their daily lives. He has an eight-point advantage on being seen as honest and trustworthy.
However, Romney has the edge when it comes to being able to "get things done," and the broad survey seems tilted in his favor, according to the poll.
Republicans and Republican-leaning independents are much more enthusiastic about the election, an important factor in persuading supporters to vote. By 18 points, 51-33 percent, they report being more enthusiastic than usual about voting. In contrast, Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents by four points say they are less enthusiastic than usual, 43-39.
The poll of 1,030 adults has a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.
Their contest is close: 57 percent say Obama has the personality and leadership qualities a president should have; 54 percent say that of Romney. Forty-seven percent say they agree with Obama on the issues that matter most to them; 45 percent say that of Romney.
In the separate Gallup tracking poll, the race stands at 46 percent Obama, 45 percent Romney. (end) hy.bs KUNA 232332 Jul 12NNNN
