Arab League slams escalating violence in Syria

CAIRO, May 26 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary General Nabil Al-Arabi condemned in a press statement on Saturday the massacre that happened yesterday in the area of Houla, which took the lives of scores of Syrians, among them many women and children.
He behooved the UN Security Council to take immediate steps to stop the incessant killings in Syria, being perpetrated by armed gangs and government soldiers.
He said he was continuing his consultations with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and UN envoy Kofi Anan regarding the escalating violence in Syrian towns and villages such as the incident in Houla, which is in close proximity to the city of Homs. Up to 90 people died in that incident.
Meanwhile, a number of international monitors arrived today in Houla and moved on to check the situation in other towns and villages such as Sultania, Jouber, Saba, and Mourk, said the Syrian News Agency.
Furthermore, the Public Authority for Syrian Revolution announced today that up to 13 people have been killed in acts of violence in Houla, noting that other locations such as Homs have also seen much violence.
The massacre in Houla yesterday prompted huge crowds of demonstrators to flood the streets in many cities across Syria, in protest of the intensity of acts of violence that take the lives of innocent by-standers.
Government forces in some cities fired or launched tear-gas bombs at the demonstrators, said a statement by the local coordination committees. (end) mfm.tk.am.ajs KUNA 261846 May 12NNNN
