BRUSSELS, Feb 6 (KUNA) -- The European People's Party (EPP), the biggest group in the European Parliament, Monday called on EU High Representative Catherine Ashton to start discussions with Turkey, the Arab League and the Syrian opposition on arrangements for setting up humanitarian corridors at the Syrian-Turkish border.
Criticising Russia and China for using their veto to block a resolution on Syria in the UNSC on Saturday, Joseph Daul, Chairman of the EPP, and Ioannis Kasoulides, Vice-Chairman, said in a joint statement: "We cannot turn our back on the mass killings by the Assad regime. China and Russia's renewed opposition to the UNSC Resolution is a death sentence for even more innocent people of Syria. We deplore their position." "The situation in Syria is of our utmost concern. The recent developments are outrageous: more than 200 people killed in one day alone," they noted.
"We urge the Assad regime to stop the bloodshed in Syria and call on President Assad to step aside in order to make room for a peaceful transition for the sake of his country," said the statement. (end) nk.hb KUNA 061544 Feb 12NNNN
