CAIRO, Jan 22 (KUNA) -- Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh
Hamad bin Jassem Al-Thani said Sunday there was a dire need for a
comprehensive review of the Arab observer mission in Syria.
Addressing the Arab Foreign Ministers Council meeting, Sheikh Hamad said
this review would prove feasibility of the extension of the mission or
"reality requires other options."
Among these options, he continued to say, was a proposal by Qatari Amir
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani to send Arab peacekeeping forces to Syria to
stop violence between the government and "counter violence" by opposition
"which was a reaction of self-defense" against armed violent actions by the
"government."
One of the options is to refer the Syrian file to the UN Security Council
in yet another bid to end the conflict in Syria, he said.
Sheikh Hamad recalled his speech last October in which he said that "the
continuation of this situation in Syria without a solution makes us
historically responsible before the Syrian people and the Arab nation."
He hoped the Arab foreign ministers would take appropriate measures to end
the conflict in Syria.
"The Arab League has exerted big efforts to convince Syria to change its
policies which brought the country into this crisis," he said.
Sheikh Hamad said the Arab initiative aimed at safeguarding unity and
stability of Syria.
However, he added, bloodshed did not stop and the "killing machine is still
working and violence is spreading everywhere while the League is trying to
find the best means to address the situation." (pickup previous)
