Court acquits two Kuwaiti former Guantanamo detainees

KUWAIT, Feb 6 (KUNA) -- The Court of Cassation here ruled the innocence of two Kuwaiti former Guantanamo detainees from the charge of illegal possession of weapons and para-military training for the purpose of carrying out an act of aggression against a friendly state, said their attorney on Wednesday.
The case against Omar Rajab Amin and Abdullah Kamel al-Kanderi has had a political rather than a criminal aura, said attorney Mubarak al-Shimmeri, in remarks to reporters, while underscoring his delight at the acquittal of his two clients.
Al-Shimmeri claimed that his clients' stint in Afghanistan was for the purpose of giving aid and comfort to Afghanis caught up in the awful grind of an internecine war. The two men, he claimed, were prone to extending their humanitarian hand to people seeking help as in Bosnia during its civil war period.
Unsurprising, the attorney deemed today's decision of acquittal by the court a feather in the cap of the Kuwaiti legal system. (end) ah.ajs KUNA 062054 Feb 08NNNN
