Jibril calls for more Gulf role to resolve Libyan crisis

BRUSSELS, June 13 (KUNA) -- The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) can urge different parties to come around the negotiating table, Mahmoud Jibril, President of the National Forces Alliances in Libya said Saturday.
"They can apply some pressure to center on the negotiations to stop fighting and reach a solution. The Gulf countries helped us tremendously at the beginning of the uprising... We need their help more today to stop the fighting and reach a political solution," Jibril told journalists in Brussels where he is attending an international conference.
He added that that the fourth UN draft on Libya needs to be rectified and improved before it can be accepted.
"I expect the House of Representatives, when it meets next week to try to study this fourth UN draft carefully and thoroughly; try to pin down on what is acceptable and not acceptable according to certain criteria," he noted.
UN special envoy Bernardino Leon presented the draft to the Libyan factions meeting in Morocco earlier this week.
Jibril explained that the criteria "are the sovereignty and unity of the country and that whatever agreement is reached cannot be reached at the expense of the legitimacy of the democratic process.
"These are the pillars that should govern our conduct. They should guide us in reading and evaluating this," said Jibril, adding that he has seen the draft text himself.
"The text can be rectified and improved with some injunctions here and there," he stressed.
Jibril is attending the "Crans Montana Forum" whose 26th annual session concludes Saturday. One session of the three-day Forum was devoted to the Arab world. (end) nk.hb
