GENEVA, May 15 (KUNA) -- Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Thursday voiced deep concern over the attack on the European Hospital in Gaza by Israeli occupation forces on May 13 which took place while WHO staff and patients were gathered for a pre-coordinated medical evacuation.
Ghebreyesus reported in a post on (X) the hospital where 12 WHO staff and 284 patients and companions were present was attacked causing death and distress.
He affirmed that although none of the evacuation groups were harmed adding that the attack reportedly resulted in six deaths and 40 injuries on the hospital premises.
"Despite the high-risk conditions WHO successfully carried out the medical evacuation yesterday to Italy, Turkey, Romania, Jordan and the UAE via the(Kerem Shalom crossing)," he confirmed.
He added that renewed hostilities near the hospital on the morning of May 15 terrified staff and patients and obstructed access to the facility.
Ghebreyesus stressed the importance of safeguarding hospitals so they can serve their life-saving function saying hospitals must be protected and must never be militarized or targeted and renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire. (end)
