AMMAN, March 1 (KUNA) -- The famous Amman Citadel or Jabal Al-Qal'a is a historic archeological site located on a hill that overlooks the center of downtown Amman, and was ruled by many great civilizations.
The site became the capital of the Kingdom of Ammon, and then came under the sway of empires such as the Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian Empires, the Romans, and Byzantines until the Islamic conquest in the seventh century AD, when the Umayyad palace was built on its top.
The Amman Citadel, 800 meters above sea levels, is surrounded by high walls and towers, full of Ammonite monuments, statues from the eighth century BC, Roman columns and Islamic monuments dating back to the Umayyad era, and stone statues dating back to 8000 BC. (end) am.nhq
