Photo Feature By Wesam Abu Zaid Gaza, Nov 15 (KUNA) -- Many Gazans have been using second-hand batteries to store some electricity for more than eight hours a day, however the cast ones pose harmful impact on the environment in the strip.
Using batteries appears a blessing for some Gazans, but unfortunately, they in fact are a serious hazard due to difficulties in recycling or re-using them, amid insufficient tools for conducting such processes soundly.
Some Gazans collect these batteries for exporting, however they often encounter obstacles placed by the Israeli occupation authorities that have been besieging the enclave.
Batteries contain metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium, nickel and silver that pose a threat to human health or the environment when improperly managed. Many of them are found badly wasted with leakage of these hazardous substances, seeping into underground water reserves. (end) wib.mah
