KUWAIT, June 26 (KUNA) --

1961 -- The State of Kuwait joins the Arab Postal Union (APU).
1961 -- The Kuwaiti people hold huge demonstrations condemning statements by the Iraqi ruler Abdulkarim Qassem demanding Kuwait's annexation. The Kuwaiti Police Chief and Public Security Appartus Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah makes a statement lauding the protestors for manifesting sincere faithfulness to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah and their readiness to redeem Kuwait with all sacrifices.
2000 -- Saudi King Saud bin Abdulaziz sends in Saudi troops in retaliation for Iraq's troops' buildup along the borders and Baghdad's demands to annex Kuwait. The Saudi forces have been deployed in the country in line with the Kuwaiti-Saudi Defense Treaty signed in 1945.
2000 -- Kuwait's National Assembly (parliament) endorses a bill for establishing private universities. It has barred co-education advising these colleges to ensure adherence to the common ethics and Islamic norms.
2000 -- The National Assembly approves a bill regarding claims for state-owned real-estate plots.
2011 -- Kuwait Oil Company wins the International Safety Award granted by the British Safety Council.
2014 -- Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KAFED) signs an accord with Lebanon to lend the country KD six million (USD 21 million) to finance a water project.
2014 -- Kuwait Petroleum International company (KPI) is awarded by a Russian association for envrionmental safety.
2015 -- Up to 25 people perish and 202 suffer injuries in a terrorist blast that has ripped through Imam Al-Sadeq Mosque in the district of Al-Sawaber in the heart of Kuwait City. His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah scrambles to the scene a few minutes later, uttering his epic sentence in Kuwaiti dialect, "Hatholi Eyali" (these are my children), alluding to the victims.
2021 -- The Kuwaiti basketball team wins the 40th Gulf champions league for the second time on record.
2007 -- Abdulaziz Al-Rshaid dies at the age of 79. He is remembered as one of Kuwait's eminent media, poetic and literary personalities. He has also served in the diplomatic corps.
2016 -- Sayyed Rajab, a pioneer figure in the sectors of heritage, arts, science and literature, passes away at the age of 80. (end) rk
