KUWAIT, May 23 (KUNA) -- 1942 -- A ship, belonging to skipper Bilal Al-Saqer sunk on the way from India to Kuwait. A number of 12 sailors survived while 24 others, including the captain, died.
1952 -- Sheikh Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Head of the Awqaf Department, inaugurated Al-Ahmadi Mosque.
1967 -- Al-Ahli Bank was established with a capital of KD two million.
1971 -- Kuwait Society for the disabled was proclaimed.
1998 -- Kuwait hosted first eight-day Afro-Asian basketball championship.
1998 -- Interior Minister opened first model police station in Abdullah Al-Salem area.
1999 -- Foundation stone was laid for Sabah Al-Ahmad naval base in the southern area of Al-Fintas. It is the largest such facility in the Middle East.
2001 -- Kuwait signed the Stockholm convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) that aims to protect the environment and human health.
2004 -- Mohammad Dheifallah Al-Qahs passed away at the age of 85. He was one of the founders of Al-Jahraa Co-op and member of the National Assembly in 1971, 1975, and 1981.
2005 -- Kuwaiti athlete of the Kuwaiti Disabled Sports Club Tareq Al-Qallaf snatches gold medal in the Epee fencing in the world competitions in Lonato, Italy.
2005 -- Abdulaziz Hamad Al-Saqer passed away at the age of 94. The figure played a prominent role in Kuwait's political, economic, and humane renaissance. He participated in establishing the National Bank of Kuwait (NBK), Kuwait Airways Corporation (KAC), Kuwaiti Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Kuwait Oil Tankers Company (KOTC), and Kuwait National Cinema Company (KNCC).
2006 -- Al-Ihsan Charity was set up with activities including promotion of social values, offering scholarships for Kuwaitis and others, and contributing to other charitable causes.
2017 -- Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) and Tunisia signed a KD 24-million-loan agreement to build five hospitals in the North African Arab country.
