KUWAIT, April 1 (KUNA) -- 1879 -- Mail services are launched in Kuwait, after His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah (also known as Mubarak the Great) asked the British Government to establish a post office in the country.
1934 -- Electric power is secured for the Kuwaiti people for the first time. However, the Kuwaiti electricity company sells power at high prices.
1957 -- A census shows population at around 200,000.
1957 -- Kuwait Oil Tankers Company (KOTC) is established. The State becomes a partner in the company in 1976.
1961 -- King Saud bin Abdulaziz visits the country and spends a week at Dasman Palace.
1961 -- Kuwaiti banknotes are circulated for the first time.
1961 -- The Kuwaiti dinar is pegged to the sterling pound.
1965 -- Oil production at Al-Rawdatain field begins.
1969 -- Kuwait Central Bank is inaugurated.
1996 -- The Cabinet approves the execution of the second phase of the "security belt" plan, designed to beef up security in the northern regions.
2002 -- Custom authorities enforce a 100 percent tariff on tobacco.
2004 -- An official ceremony is held in Washington to declare Kuwait a major non-NATO ally of the US.
