BEIRUT, Feb 27 (KUNA) -- The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced on Friday that it found about 946 mines which were destroyed on site while clearing two minefields out of five. The minefields have been handed over to the Lebanese Army, south of the country, UNIFIL said in a statement.
In total, UNIFIL has cleared and handed over five minefields - covering 12,030 square metres - to the Lebanese Mine Action Centre (LMAC) of the LAF since the peacekeeping deminers resumed humanitarian demining last August, it added. During this period, UNIFIL deminers also found and destroyed 2,173 mines, it pointed out.
One cleared minefield in Blida was handed over on December 19, 2025 and two in Maroun ar-Ra's on February 4, 2026, it stated.
Meanwhile, UNIFIL Chief of Staff Major General Paul Sanzey, representing the UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander, said that the demining work lasting months required 'discipline, professionalism, and technical excellence'.
Resuming the demining process came upon a request from the Lebanese government about two years after operations were suspended due to the exchange of fire across the "Blue Line", he noted. (end) fz.maa.hm
