NEW DELHI, Feb 27 (KUNA) -- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Mumbai on Friday in a four-day India visit to unlock new opportunities.
Upon arrival, Carney wrote on his official X account: "India is the world's fastest-growing major economy. We just arrived in Mumbai to meet with business leaders - and forge partnerships that will unlock new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses." Carney is visiting upon the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the visit, he will participate in separate business engagements, interact with Indian and Canadian CEOs, industry and financial experts, innovators and educators in Mumbai.
He is scheduled to meet Modi on March 2nd in New Delhi to hold delegation-level talks. Both leaders will review the progress achieved across diverse areas of the India-Canada Strategic Partnership and will also take stock of ongoing cooperation in key pillars, including trade and investment; energy; critical minerals; agriculture; education, research, and innovation; and people-to-people ties.
Carney's visit assumes importance as it comes at a pivotal juncture in normalization of India-Canada bilateral ties. India-Canada ties deteriorated during former Premier Justin Trudeau as he accused New Delhi of involving in the killing of a key Sikh separatist activist on Canadian land.
This triggered a major diplomatic tension as India accused Canada of supporting the Sikh separatist movement, leading to the expulsion of High Commissioners and other diplomats from each other's capital. (end) atk.hb
