CAIRO, Feb 27 (KUNA) -- Egypt underscored the importance of resolving all outstanding disputes and concerns in the ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran, stressing the need to reach compromise solutions away from military options.
In a press statement on Friday, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the remarks came during two separate phone calls held by Egyptian Foreign Minister Bader Abdelatti with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi.
During the calls, Abdelatti was briefed by both sides on the latest developments and substance of the most recent round of negotiations between Washington and Tehran, which was held in Geneva.
The Egyptian minister reaffirmed Cairo's firm position in support of diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving outstanding issues, emphasizing the importance of continuing the negotiation track and avoiding further escalation in the region.
For their part, Araghchi and Grossi expressed appreciation for Egypt's efforts to reduce tensions and de-escalate conflicts in the region, stressing their keenness to maintain coordination and consultation in a manner that would help reach a comprehensive settlement of the Iranian nuclear file and promote regional security and stability.
Meanwhile, Iranian state television reported that the phone call between Araghchi and Abdelatti addressed the latest developments in the nuclear negotiation process between Tehran and Washington, in addition to regional and international issues.
Araghchi briefed the Egyptian minister on the outcome of the latest round of indirect nuclear talks between Iran and the United States, which took place on Thursday in Geneva, it added.
During the call, Araghchi affirmed "Tehran's interest in utilizing diplomacy to resolve issues," noting that "success in this process requires seriousness and realism from the other side and refraining from ambitions and any miscalculations."
Araghchi participated in the third round of Iranian-US talks held in Geneva under Omani mediation, in the presence of US Special Presidential Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff and senior US official Jared Kushner. (end)
