KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 25 (KUNA) -- The Royal Thai Army said Wednesday it exchanged fire with Cambodian forces along the shared border after a 40mm grenade was fired near a Thai patrol in the Plan Hin Pad Kon area on Tuesday.
Army spokesperson Major General Winthai Suvaree said the incident took place while Thai troops were conducting a routine patrol.
He said Cambodian forces fired one 40mm grenade that landed near the Thai patrol point, confirming no injuries were reported among Thai personnel.
Thai forces responded with a grenade launcher toward the source of fire, as a warning and in self-defense, while reinforcing surveillance and precautionary measures.
The spokesperson described the incident as a violation of the joint ceasefire statement signed on December 27, 2025, which ended three weeks of deadly border clashes.
He said initial assessments suggest the incident may be linked to Cambodian troop rotations, with new personnel possibly lacking full familiarity with regulations and command structures.
Thai units have heightened precautionary measures, prioritizing the safety of personnel and border residents.
The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia dates back over a century to French colonial-era demarcations along an 800-kilometer frontier. Clashes last year left dozens dead and displaced more than one million people. (end) aab.aai
