NEW YORK, Feb 24 (KUNA) -- UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres named Tuesday Pekka Haavisto of Finland as his new Personal Envoy for Sudan, succeeding Ramtane Lamamra of Algeria, whom Guterres thanked for his dedication and commitment to peace efforts in Sudan.
The UN stated that Haavisto has more than 40 years of experience in politics and international affairs. He has held several ministerial positions in the Government of Finland, including Minister for Foreign Affairs, as well as senior roles in the EU and the UN. He is currently a member of the Finnish Parliament.
The new Personal Envoy served from 2009 to 2017 as the Special Representative of the Finnish Foreign Minister for mediation and crisis management in Africa. From 2005 to 2007, he worked as the EU's Special Representative in Sudan and participated in the Darfur peace negotiations. (end) ast.onm
