WASHINGTON, Feb 5 (KUNA) -- The second round of trilateral talks involving delegations from the United States, Ukraine, and the Russian Federation concluded in the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, resulting in a landmark agreement on prisoner exchanges and the restoration of direct military communication between Washington and Moscow.
According to a joint statement issued at the end of the two-day summit on Thursday, the Russian Federation and Ukraine reached an accord to release 314 prisoners of war, with 157 personnel to be freed by each side.
This marks the first prisoner swap between the two nations in five months, signaling a significant breakthrough in humanitarian efforts, added the statement.
On the security front, the United States and Russia agreed to re-establish a high-level "military-to-military" dialogue channel to be led by General Alexus Grynkewich, Commander of the US European Command.
This vital communication link, which had been suspended prior to the onset of the conflict, is regarded as a cornerstone for maintaining stability and preventing unintended escalation.
The discussions, held over February 4 and 5, focused on creating conditions for a durable peace, including detailed technical methods for implementing a ceasefire and establishing mechanisms to monitor the cessation of military activities.
The participating delegations expressed their profound appreciation to the United Arab Emirates for hosting the talks. Furthermore, both the Ukrainian and Russian sides extended their gratitude to US President Donald Trump for his leadership in advancing diplomatic efforts to end the war.
The delegations have returned to their respective capitals for consultations, with a commitment to resume trilateral discussions in the coming weeks. (end)
