WASHINGTON, Feb 4 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump and his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, praised their meeting at the White House on Tuesday evening, following a period of tension that has eased since the beginning of the year.
Trump was asked by reporters at the White House after a closed-door meeting with Petro whether they had reached an agreement on drug trafficking, he stated "Yeah we did, we worked on it and we got along very well." He added, "We're working on that (combating drugs), and we're working on some other things too. We had a very good meeting." For his part, Petro said that "despite disagreements on issues such as drug trafficking and energy, the meeting with President Donald Trump left an optimistic balance and highlighted that freedom is the main point of encounter between the two countries." Last month, Trump said he had received a phone call for the first time from his Colombian counterpart, during which they discussed drug-related issues and bilateral relations.
This comes days after a period of escalating tensions between the two countries over various issues, including the US military's arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. (end) asj.tma.res
