BRUSSELS, Jan 30 (KUNA) -- The European Union on Friday expressed deep concern over the deterioration of the security situation in the Republic of South Sudan, particularly in Jonglei State.
EU spokesperson Anouar El-Anouni called on all parties to return to compliance with the provisions of the 2018 peace agreement.
"An immediate ceasefire is the only guarantee for achieving peace and stability in South Sudan," El-Anouni said in a statement, stressing the need for all parties to avoid further escalation.
He added that the European Union strongly condemns any inflammatory rhetoric calling for violence against civilians.
The EU will continue to work with the international community to uphold the principle of justice and hold those responsible for violations to account, if necessary, he affirmed.
The statement explained that the European Union has invested heavily in supporting peace efforts in South Sudan through backing the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the institutions of the peace agreement, in addition to providing humanitarian assistance to millions of South Sudanese citizens.
The EU also expressed its concern over the sharp rise in the number of displaced persons and those deprived of care and life-saving assistance as a result of the renewed infighting.
It urged ensuring unrestricted humanitarian access, respect for international humanitarian law, and protection of humanitarian facilities and workers. (end)
