KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 (KUNA) -- A landslide triggered by torrential rains on Indonesia's main island of Java killed at least eight people and left 82 others missing on Saturday, according to Indonesian authorities.
Rescuers are still searching for scores of missing residents amid very tough field circumstances, Spokesman for the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency Abd Muhari said in a press statement.
Many people managed to escape the disaster, while others were feared buried under heaps of mud and debris, the spokesman pointed out.
The landslide hit two villages in West Bandung district of West Java province, where a large number of houses were buried under masses of mud and rocks following overnight heavy rains.
Last January, more than 20 people were killed after having been swept away in floods and landslides after torrential rains in Central Java province. (end) aab.mt
