ISLAMABAD, Jan 23 (KUNA) -- At least five people lost their lives and 10 others injured in a suicide attack in Pakistan's northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province bordering Afghanistan.
The attack targeted the residence of a peace committee member in Dera Ismail Khan District, spokesperson for KPK Rescue 1122 department, Bilal Ahmed Faizi in a statement on Friday.
He expressed fear that the casualty toll could rise as the rescue operation is still ongoing. District police chief, Sajjad Ahmed Sahibzada said that the attack occurred at the residence of peace committee leader Noor Alam Mehsud, where a wedding ceremony was being held. He confirmed that the explosion was a suicide blast. Chief Minister of KPK, Sohail Afridi strongly condemned the blast and sought a report from the KPK police chief. He also directed law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident and identify those responsible. Last year seven people were killed when a peace committee office was attacked in KPK's Bannu district. (end) sbk.gb
