LONDON, Jan 19 (KUNA) - UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer affirmed on Monday that Greenland belonged to its people and Denmark, asserting that this principle enjoys the country's fundamental support.
Speaking at an emergency Downing Street press conference, Starmer said, "There is a principle here that cannot be set aside.. any decision about the future status of Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark alone. That right is fundamental and we support it."
Regarding the US threats to impose tariffs in retaliation for the lack of several countries ' support for its plans to take over Greenland, Starmer stated, "Alliances endure because they're built on respect and partnership, not pressure. That is why I said the use of tariffs against allies is completely wrong. It is not the right way to resolve differences within an alliance. Nor is it helpful to frame efforts to strengthen Greenland's security as a justification for economic pressure."
"A tariff war is in nobody's interests. We have not got to that stage, and my focus therefore is that we don't get to that stage," he affirmed.
The US threatened 10-percent tariffs on several NATO allies and European countries in relation to their position on Greenland. (pick up previous)
