RAMALLAH, Jan 14 (KUNA) -- The Palestinians on Wednesday offered their backing for the formation of a technocratic committee to govern the Gaza Strip for a transitional period, as outlined in a peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump.
The "decisive leadership" demonstrated by Trump, whose direct engagement and determination have contributed to creating a "new opportunity" for peace, stability and good governance in Gaza, Palestinian news agency WAFA quoted a statement by the presidency.
It went on to give equal credit to the "significant efforts" by mediator and guarantor states, acknowledging the contributions of Egypt, Qatar and Turkiye towards such measures, while it also reiterated the need of "linking" Palestinian Authority institutions in Gaza and the West Bank.
The statement urged all Palestinian factions and national institutions alike to "assume their national and historical responsibilities," to ensure the success of what it termed a "critical" transitional phase.
The 15-member technocratic committee will be headed by Ali Shaath, an official who had assumed various roles within the Palestinian Authority. (end) nq.nam
